MCSM HELPS AT MONUMENTAL RIFLE AND PISTOL CLUB
NRA WOMEN ON TARGET DAY AT THE RANGE

On Saturday, May 31, 2003 approximately 100 Women On Target met at the Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore range at Marriottsville, Maryland to learn about rifle and pistol shooting. The event was hosted by Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club and organized by the club Secretary/Treasurer, Roxanne Byczkowski and assisted by approximately 80 members of the various AGC clubs.

The Women On Target events are official NRA events designed to foster firearm understanding and enjoyment by all women. For more details on how you can sponsor or assist in an event see the NRA web pages under Women's events.

The reservations were limited to 50, then 100 when demand mushroomed. At the final count 80 more women wanting to take part were added to the "waiting list". Two important facts are evident here.

First, there is massive interest in women oriented events of this type. The organizers and helpers are already contemplating other events for the near future, this summer teaching shotgun and personal protection among other areas of education.

The second important fact is that there was a large turnout of helpers for the event. The club members went out of their way to help in days leading up to the event and at the event. There is strong desire buy the "gun guys" to help the ladies understand and become comfortable with our culture. I don't think I saw a frown all day. I think the ladies learned the truth behind the statement, "An armed society is a polite society".

Our own MCSM members; Bob Culver, Mike Keder and Mike Jarvis were there, coaching the pistol and rifle lines and even flipping burgers in the kitchen. The firing line was fun, but at lunch time the burgers were great. Thanks Mike!

I was able to solicit a TON of information material from various groups like; NRA, Second Amendment Sisters, LEAA, GOA, Eddie Eagle, JPFO and etc. and put together an envelope of material for distribution to each attendee. Perhaps we will see some of them at future MCSM meetings or at the area Gun shows.

I was impressed with some of my students on the pistol line who had little or no previous pistol experience. They quickly learned the workings and then the technique of shooting the Ruger 22-45 with a red dot sight. One lady hit 21 of her first 22 shots on a 10 inch pie plate at 25 yards. And then she repeated it on a second target with 31 of 35 shots! Another hit 10 of 10 shots on 8 inch Newbold plastic plates in competition and won the first place trophy for the pistol competition. Sign them up!! On the rifle line several ladies hit all of the 8, 6, 4 and 2 inch Newbold targets and went into the shoot-off on the 2 inch discs at 50 yards. After more than a dozen hits in a row on 2 inch discs one was the clear winner but said she could keep on going if we wanted her to continue. Enough is enough!

Look for an extensive write-up on this event to be seen on the AGC / Monumental web sites in the near future. MCSM will flag and link the articles as soon as they appear.

Sincerely,
Bob Culver, MCSM
